Etanan is a project based on COV’s interest in creating an emotional and psychological impact on the audience through space, sound and light. Primitive methods sit alongside more recent developments in psychoacoustics, but the technology and methodology are of secondary importance to the effect. Technology has become of more and more central importance in our lives, often to the detriment of deeper psychological needs, and this is also true within art and performance. We are more concerned with the feeling and energy of the space, utilising the intuitive craft of performance, awareness for physical materials and physiological responses associated with sound. It is about remembering how to listen to our bodies and getting back to a more naive way of listening, devoid of intellectual interference.
