Factory Magazine is Factory Berlin’s in-house brand publication. Launched in 2016, the magazine aims to tell the stories of Factory’s diverse community and network, while continuously engaging a global audience.
As editor-in-chief, I ran and oversaw Factory Magazine from the conceptualization of stories to execution, from its beginnings until September 2018. I developed formats and built up the editorial strategy with emphasis on authenticity and reader experience, while also writing around 50 per cent of the articles. The most fun part of this experience was that I got to work together with highly talented, interdisciplinary freelancers, such as photographer Ben Fuchs, and writer Charmaine Li.
During my tenure, we produced more than 40 articles and illustrated each with high-quality photography. We interviewed the CEOs and founders of some of the most influential global brands and key technology players, including Airbnb, Y Combinator, Evernote, Techstars, Dubsmash, DigitalOcean, Mic and Clue; as well as featured Factory’s local heroes and new kids on the block.
The magazine’s content falls into two editorial categories: interviews and features. The interviews portray entrepreneurial journeys, providing a behind-the-scenes look into startup life: the initial struggles and triumphs of starting a new business. The features dig deeper into specific topics, collecting insights of industry experts. These pieces can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of branding, while benefiting Factory of the association to the interviewees and the values they promote.
At the time of my departure, the magazine dominated page views on Factory’s website, and its articles generated thousands of new visitors every month and were widely shared on social media.
