First Virtual Exhibition on the Moon (Open Art 2018)

  • Nathan Taylor

The Open Art project isn't just a chance for artists to be part of a virtual exhibition. It's also a chance for us to experiment and to do something a bit far-fetched. We wanted to make the most of the creative possibilities offered by a virtual space. So we created the first art exhibition on the Moon.

The gallery is set inside a series of open spaces and tunnels which have been dug into the lunar rock. The shape of the space is similar to an open quarry, but with a futuristic sci-fi aesthetic. Some of the deeper excavations are filled with water, creating beautiful reflections and dramatic shadows.
There is only one building and it's possible to climb up onto the roof for a view of the surrounding landscape. The gallery is built in the centre of a huge crater, surrounded by mountains.
Visitors can climb to each level of the gallery and explore the artwork on show. It features over 200 pieces by more than 60 different artists, including fine art, photography and video.
The Sun casts dramatic shadows across the gallery and can be seen in the sky above, along with thousands of stars. There is also a fantastic view of planet Earth, which looks surprising big when viewed from the Moon. Visitors who take their time to explore every area of the gallery can also find a telescope and get a closer view of the Earth spinning on its axis.
There are also a few other 'easter eggs' hidden around the gallery. This includes a couple of human relics from earlier space missions. It's also possible to escape the confines of the gallery and walk to the mountains in the distance. But this might be a challenge only for the gamers.
The Open Art project invites artists from around the world to take part in their first virtual exhibition. It is free to enter, free to access and free to share. Go to the Curat10n web site if you'd like to submit your artwork for the next edition. Every year we try to make it beigger and better than the last.
