Getting GIFfy with it

  • Nadina Ali
I love colour, I love type, I love GIFs. This is what happens when I mix them all together.
This is the first GIF I've ever made! I wanted this to be a mantra to encourage girls and women to embrace being themselves and not caring too much about what society expects them to be.
I made this GIF for this year's International Women's Day because women need cheering all day everyday! The inspiration behind this artwork is a track by the same name from one of my favourite late 90s underground rap albums "Fantastic, Vol.2" by Slum Village. The track is not a feminist anthem in itself but its chorus never fails to cheer me up so I thought it'd be nice to translate that cheering vibe into an artwork.
This GIF was inspired by Notorious B.I.G. 's track "Juicy" which is one of my top favourite 90s rap tracks. I listened to it so many times over the years but it's only recently that I finally paid close attention to the lyrics and appreciated the positive message behind the lyrics. I first did the lettering for this artwork by hand and then digitised it.
I made this GIF to cheer for the French football team when they made it to the final of the World Cup this year and I'd like to think it helped them winning it! "Allez! Allez! Allez!" roughly translates as "Go! Go! Go!". I also first did the lettering for this piece by hand and then digitised it.
I recently realised that I was terrible at making time to rest and relax so this was my (fun) attempt at reminding me that I need to make it happen for myself more regularly instead of forcing myself into resting and relaxing out of sheer exhaustion. Self care matters!
