Ghost signs

The art of hand-painting signs has diminished in recent decades as mechanised and digital printing processes have taken over. I sought out a ‘Ghost Sign’ tour in London’s Stoke Newington ran by subject devotee Sam Roberts. Each ghost sign uncovered and interesting story or insight into the history of the individual sign.

I set myself the challenge of hand printing twenty newspapers. As a tribute to the sign painters, I went the long way around producing the papers, by hand rendering all of the typography of the ghost signs and printing the type piece by piece on newsprint.
