Global Redesign Finlandia Vodka

  • Lee Buffham-Wade

A redesign brought about by the need to increase the label size and to enhance the vodka’s story. The brave idea here was to put ice and purity at the heart of the design. By lowering the branded label I was able to showcase an artistic interpretation of the ice water as previously explored by Finnish artist Tapio Wirkkala. This felt to be in keeping and maintaining the crafted artistic expression of the brand. The ice appears to flow and come alive as the bottle turns making this a captivating piece of design. There are even things hidden in the ice.

At every point we looked to express the story of ‘Vodka from the land of the midnight sun’. A high cut off sun and emanating rays above the Finnish reindeer are a prominent feature both in the label design and the bottle design. The Finlandia logo was created to complement the smoothness and simplicity of the product and became a bespoke font for brand graphic communication.
The brand Identity and brand manual was updated a unique set of equities defined for use across brand communications, key visuals and digital platforms.
The flavour range used core elements of the main label design and used fruit silhouettes created from a unique Finlandia pattern to bring personality and difference to the fruit flavours.
