Graduate Collection - "Friendly Faces"

  • Lois Majek-Odunmi

Friendly faces was one of two of my graduate collections that were both aimed at kids wear clothing. The aim of this collection is to bring a sense of inclusion to the children’s wear clothing industry in relation to race. Black and Brown children are not represented in the clothing that is available for their age group and that should change. We often see characters that are created for children’s clothing that tend to resemble the children that are wearing these clothes however it is rare that these characters are children of colour. I believe that the textile design industry should be an industry that responds and adapts to the climate we are surrounded by and mirror that climate through design. Black lives matter has been seen as a trend as of recent through the likes of social media however I believe the design industry can be used as just one of the mediums to ensure that actions are being taken to make ALL Black lives matter and allow younger generations of black and brown children to see themselves represented in all aspects of society along with their white counterparts. Every child deserves to see themselves represented everywhere.
