Highlighting a Housing Crisis

  • Bor Klemenc Mencin
The growing shortage of affordable housing has led to spiraling rents and house prices in major cities all across the globe. Slovenia's capital Ljubljana is no different - ever since 2014 rents have been rising at an average rate of 10% per year.

With new housing developments few and far between, most people have no choice but to bunk together in tiny rooms or pay exorbitant rents. If left unchecked, this trend will continue to wreak havoc on the socio-economic fabric of the city.

A citizens' initiative Where will we sleep tomorrow? has been hard at work trying to bring this issue onto the agenda of local and national politicians, calling for a clear, thought-out and well-funded housing policy that has been lacking for the past 30 years.
*Can your children move out?
To shed light on the issue, we created a series of outdoor ads in the form of tear-off posters - a common sight in apartment block lobbies - and placed them all across the city.
By posing simple questions about the current housing situation and providing only one possible (true) answer, decision-makers could no longer ignore the issue.
*Is the roof rocking above your head?
*Can you afford an apartment?
*Is your wage rising slower than your rent?
Onlookers were invited to visit www.stanovanjska-kriza.je to learn more about the deepening housing crisis and join the initiative.
The grassroots campaign attracted widespread media attention including national and local newspapers, magazines and radio. Slovene national television even dedicated an entire prime time segment to the housing crisis.
