This project is titled ‘Hothouse Earth,’ taking its title from the terminology used by scientists to name the state in which the Earth has warmed by the current trajectory of 3 or 4 degrees Celsius. This level of warming will result in places becoming uninhabitable due to extreme weather conditions, where natural ‘disasters’ will be the new norm. Upon researching for this project, it became apparent that the textile and apparel industry is responsible for environmental degradation on a mass scale, and so in response to this, I have created a satirical trend forecasting look-book for a volatile climate, set for S/S and A/W 2084. The look-book makes a mockery of the idea that capitalism will surely continue to be at the centre of our warming world, and presents a variety of (silly) trends fit to suit consumers in extreme weather conditions. All products used for styling have been sourced from scrap merchants, up-cycling centres, or are handmade by me with the view of being as sustainable as possible in line with the message I am conveying.
