  • Nicole McLaughlin

Created for the House of Illustration competition 2020. Each piece is designed with a similar palette having a distinct colour to highlight an aspect of the poem.

"And true plain hearts do in the faces rest;
Where can we find two better hemispheres,"

The Good Morrow by John Donne. This is a digital piece, I was inspired by old star constellation maps relevant to the time this poem was written. I loved the idea that their love consuming each other.
"...till that time comes when you come to the door of dreams,
carrying oranges that cast a glow up into your face."

The Trick by Imtiaz Dharker. Learning the passing of her husband you can instantly feel the loss within this poem. The visuals of oranges stood out the strongest as I could sense the warmth. I wanted to illustrate her alone embracing the memory.
"Futile - the winds -
To a Heart in port -
Done with the Compass -
Done with the Chart!"

Wild nights - Wild nights! by Emily Dickinson. I loved the passion within this poem however I felt she was speaking to someone who wasn't there. I felt this poem was her fantasying her thoughts.
