Howl's Moving Castle

  • Laura Ward

This was for a unit in my second year of university. I wanted to enter the 2019 House of Illustration Folio Society Awards and the book chosen was 'Howl's Moving Castle' - one of my childhood favourites. I went and reread the story and got some inspiration from Harry Clarke, Aubrey Beardsley and Alphonse Mucha to create an art nouveau approach to the story. I chose several key elements that I liked the best and also made a book cover design.

There was lots of detail that I wanted to include, as this is very prevelent in art nouveau, and I always enjoyed searching for little details in book illustrations when I was younger. For example, the detail here is mainly on Howl's coat- especially the dragon, which is for his last name- Pendragon, and the stars on the underside, because stars are very prevalent in the story.
