Hundred Years Gallery, London - Virtual Exhibition (2019)

  • Nathan Taylor

This virtual exhibition was produced as part of the Summer Show at Hundred Years Gallery in East London. It's a busy exhibition, with walls crammed full of artwork in many styles and media. For the virtual version we wanted to give each piece more space. So we expanded the space by creating several mirror images of the gallery.

The first step was to accurately measure and recreate the real gallery, with it's two floors and a large front window which opens out onto the street. The gallery is then mirrored four times, creating four times as much wall space. Visitors can either walk across the "street" to another version of the gallery across the road, or they can use the tunnel in the basement.
In some of these images you can see the different signs above each version of the gallery. These use mirror bakwards/forwards writing and black/white designs to show the 4 different versions of the gallery. The entire scene is surrounded by a dream-like cloudy sky, making this a slightly surreal experience.
The exhibition includes a dynamic sound sculpture with realistic 3D audio. As visitors move around the space they hear the sound mixing from 3 different sources, with each channel becoming louder/quieter depending on the distance.

This realistic 3D sound means that artists and exhibitors can create a customised soundtrack which includes special effects, audio guides or music.
