Inside: The Prison Research Journal

What opportunities might exist for a Graphic Designer to visually communicate statistical information and data relating to the field of criminal justice?
This project developed as a way to explore the relationship between graphic design and social responsibility in response to crime and the criminal justice system. I am interested in examining the opportunities that might exist for graphic design to make a positive contribution within the field of criminal justice, and the role graphic design could play in the instigation of social change in the field of crime and criminal justice.
Crime data and prison statistics are available in the public domain, however, the format of this information is often presented as a complex and indigestible collection of spreadsheets and raw data. I intend to use the data available in order to inform my research and the development of this project.
I was interested in creating a publication because I wanted to create something physical that focuses on a niche segment of society (Prisons). The physicality of a publication provides an alternative to the digital format which is so readily available to anyone with internet access. Producing a physical outcome creates the idea of exclusivity and is only accessible to those who look for it - which is similar to the way in which I have researched the information for this project; the information, data and statistics is available for those who look for it. My intention behind creating this publication is so that not only is the information now provided in an alternative format, but it is also presented in a clear format which is easy to understand.
