International folklore festival of Salamina

During my first year of studies, I realized that I wanted to put my knowledge and enthusiasm in something that would create a positive change, so I joined a small team and we started the organization of the 1st international folklore festival of Salamina, a 7 day event which had as a goal to gather art groups from all over the world, host them and introduce them to the culture of our island Salamina. A small diverted team, we strive to gather funds ,sponsorships and obtain public authorizations. The festival would have amounted to nothing more than a fantasy unless we were prepared to give our full commitment and put in some hard work. I was lucky enough to work with people I admired, with whom I did not necessarily share the same opinion and it was on those times that I learned to think, listen and work within a team for a same purpose. Managing the program organization, scheduling our expenses and possible risks, being a member of marketing team and also have to communicate with local authorities, challenged me every single day. I needed to be persistent and take actions such as the implementation of trackers and databases to manage our contacts of groups and sponsorships for future festivals , finding sponsors outside the island and working on promotion ideas in order to establish the festival as an island’s tradition. In the end, some of the things I am proudest is that this festival is already nine years old and counts hundreds of participants and volunteers from all over the world, while we managed to conduct a pilot survey for world tourism organization of UN and have the festival of 2017 to be included and supported from the Silk road program of the united nations world tourism organization for the international year of sustainable tourism.
