Juxtaposition - First University Project!

  • Megan Roberts

For my very first university module our brief was based around 'Juxtaposition', we were tasked with selecting 2 juxtaposing words and creating a line up based on our interpretation of them. I chose 'Action/Reaction' and worked with the concept of knots. The knot can represent a lot of things and I used it to symbolise unity and the uniting of people in time of conflict, in contrast to it being used often in combat. This was my first experience with the formal design process, as well as practices like draping and photoshop. I kept to a neutral based colour palette punctuated with pops of bright hues often seen in uniforms. I feel it important to show this work as I am both proud of it being my frist project and something I still enjoy to look back on today, as well as being proud of just how far I have come from it in 3 years.

The starting point I used was the idea of uniforms. Something so typically associated with combat, but is actually such a large umbrella of ideas.
It was throughout this project that I started to experiment more with collage and mark making, attempting to render and create textures and prints.
