Keki ya Ulaya (Cake of the West)

We have recently acquired the rights to an upcoming Swahili-language novel, 'Keki ya Ulaya', by Yussuf Shoka Hamad. 'Keki ya Ulaya' depicts a Zanzibari civil servant, Kisabaluu, who flees to Europe after a run-in with a drug-smuggling gang in his home town. After a perilous journey to the UK, he encounters a society largely ignorant of his abilities and aspirations and unable to look beyond his refugee status. He finds himself destitute and runs into trouble with the law, causing him to plot his return home. (Picture is of the author)
