KORE KANA?

  • Tomomi Maezawa
With a double-meaning of “is this a Japanese character?” (これ仮名?) and “maybe this is the one?” (これかな?) in Japanese, “KORE KANA?” was a participative performance part of Housewarming by Fabrica x Airbnb, where each designer showed a different interpretation of his own cultural “welcoming”.
In Japan, exchanging business cards is considered a formal introduction of high cultural importance. KORE KANA? reinterpreted the ritual inviting visitors to exchange their names with mine through stamping our names on a tote bag.
The stamps were disassembled letters of Hiragana characters that became graphic elements favouring the welcome act as a shared experience beyond the formal exchange of social identities. Each bag became a visual record of how we interacted with the shapes of each other’s name.
