This segment by Eric will teach you how to network. ⭐ A Closer Look at Chila Kumari Singh Burman Chila Kumari Singh Burman is celebrated for her interdisciplinary practice, which span printmaking, painting, installation and film. Her work draws on her Punjabi heritage and radical feminist perspectives. She uses her work as a means to explore the multiplicity of South Asian identities within a British context. ⭐ Check out a specially curated playlist by Indian Ocean Sound System. Indian Ocean Sound System was established in 1983 by Ashok Burman (DJ Ash). Ash was the first Indian sound in the UK to be given a slot on Kiss FM. A pioneering promoter of up-and-coming UK Asian artists and bands. ⭐ 4 BROWN GIRLS WHO WRITE Roshni Goyate, Sharan Hunjan, Sheena Patel and Sunnah Khan are four writers that make up the collective 4 BROWN GIRLS WHO WRITE. Sit back and enjoy a radical polyphonic performance as they freestyle on life, poetry, and the work of Chila Kumari Singh Burman. They will also be reading from their recent collection of poetry and prose published by Rough Trade Books. ⭐ Sarathy Korwar Leading UK jazz musician Sarathy Korwar has selected one of his short films as a response to Burman's work. The film is a collaboration with poet and playwright Zia Ahmed and classical vocalist and composer Aditya Prakashis. It explores the Indian diasporic experience in contemporary Britain. “The video asks what it takes to integrate into British society and be considered British, juxtaposed on lyrics that describe the everyday racist stereotyping of South Asians, it’s an ironic look at what it means to be brown in the UK today.” The song appears on his new album More Arriving. ⭐ Reprezent Radio: The voice of young London Reprezent Radio, streaming from Brixton, curate a playlist for the evening.
