Let's Talk about the 'S' Word. What does Sustainability mean to you?

  • ELE WARD

With the likes of @Nike announcing earlier this week that they’ve signed an agreement to source 100% renewable energy for their production facilities in Europe, to fast-fashion brands bringing one-off ‘Green’ clothing collections to the high-street - everyone’s talking about the 'S' word. ⁣ ⁣ But what does the term 'Sustainability' ACTUALLY mean in regards to fashion? ⁣ ⁣ The answer varies from brand to brand. It can incorporate humanitarianism, fair trade, animal rights, business ethics, the environment, inclusivity… the list goes on. ⁣ ⁣ For me, and what guides my work on S.H., it is the need to understand 'sustainability' as an idea that begins with ‘transparency’. I relate this to both 'process' (e.g. minimising environmental impact in terms of production) and 'people' (particularly garment workers at the core of clothing production yet too often invisible). ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ To combat an increasing number of contrasting definitions for ‘sustainability’, for the past few months I’ve been working on a series titled, ‘What does Sustainability mean to you?’. The series will introduce and celebrate the various ways that individuals within the fashion industry are using sustainability to guide and build their work. ⁣ ⁣ Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing interviews with a range of inspiring individuals who are exploring the world of sustainable fashion in their own way. From sustainable fashion stylists who are shaking up the industry to clothing brands who accept that they need to be ‘doing more’. ⁣ ⁣ I hope the series gives you some inspiration on how you can create a more sustainable lifestyle for yourself that works for YOU.
