For my final major project at University of Brighton, I was instructed to create a piece that I felt would showcase my skills best. Creating a cookbook allowed me to demonstrate my photography, styling, and design abilities as well as my ability to manage the entire design process from conception to print.
I chose to do a cookbook specifically because of my interest in food photography. I’m particularly inspired by the work of The Gourmand, Kelsey McClellan, and Danielle Basser. In addition, the cookbook
format allows for large photographs and minimal design constraints.
The final piece, entitled Living off the Loan, is a three chapter recipe book aimed towards students struggling to afford meals throughout each term. I wanted to create something that had a two toned, contrasted colour theme paired with a gothic typographic feel. The bright photography and colorful styling add additional depth and color to the design.
The low quality food appears almost plastic and artificial, creating an exciting contrast with polished, professional printing and binding
