Living With Development

  • Kyle Taylor

‘Living With Development’ explores the notion of cities stuck in a cycle of constant development through an outdoor graphic exhibition. To challenge its impact on the area and the effect it has on the public. Although ultimately this exhibition cannot change the industry, it can make us question the characteristics and our tolerance towards it; examine our emotions and reactions to this chaotic force; and to challenge its impact on wellbeing and urban environments as we seek to grasp an understanding of how our surroundings play an important part in modern day society.

An exhibition book design displays the project in its entirety, demonstrating the 'constructed graphics' that incorporates material synonyms with the topic. This project acts as my final year major project at Edinburgh Napier University; unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic an exhibition could not take place and the majority of the project had to be completed at home. Though intially this added an extra level of difficulties, the project was still able to achieve the goals and outcomes originally envisioned.
The project was largely inspired by the city of Edinburgh, which has a fascinating development history, present and future. Photographs were taken to highlight the human relationship with the construction that exists, demonstrating that we will walk past these creations hundreds of times while they will remain for a length duration.
