As part of a project I was required to take responsibility for my own direction of study. I needed to define a project that would require a comprehensive design solution and undertake independent project management and research into a substantial and complex body of independent work. For this brief I developed the Idea to create a Lon¬don Night Bus Film Festival (LNBFF) that focuses on Lon¬don based films or films set in London. The main LNBFF idea and difference from other film festivals is to show films on a bus and link the bus routes with locations used in the films. I conducted research generally into London based imagery and then more specifically into London transport typography, symbolism and colours throughout the years. The main thing that comes to mind when I think about a Lon¬don bus is the red colour, top deck and the fabric pattern. The fabric was designed specifi¬cally to echo the interior colour scheme of the vehicle: yellow ceilings, red lower sides and green seat backs. I then began looking into similarities between watching films and London transport, for example the windows and film tape, wheels and film reels, Lights, camera angles and a person’s field of view. This all helped me to create a visual for the piece utilizing the idea of light revealing only part of an image, creating a shadowed look that will create a feeling of unease and discomfort which will thematically relate back to the film genres. This is the main idea of the festival branding and the core visual for the promotional video. The purpose of this video is to showcase that the whole event and all of the action takes place on the bus, and to invite people to the festival and not actually reveal the festival’s location until the end of the promo. I took inspiration from the films I selected for this project and subtly referenced them in the design of my characters and their actions. The idea for the logo was to have a simple mark with multiple interpretations, simple text with lines above and below that can be seen as road lines or a frame from a film reel, the interpretation can depend on the context in which the logo is used. The main colours are yellow and black as I didn’t want a piece that was too obviously based around London and therefore the location would overpower the content.
