Look at my Fallopian tubes!

  • Clara Saez Calabuig

A human-sized garment that gives visibility to a body part that is systematically invisibilized, understudied and misunderstood - the internal female reproductive system, formed of the vagina, cervix, uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries. The idea for this project stemmed from an image of a real uterus I found. The aim was to personify and represent these organs in a three-dimensional, visually impactful way.

Concept

Throughout the research phase of the project, the anatomical images I found of these organs were pink, cute and fluffy symmetrical illustrations. My creative intention was to contrast this portrayal by accurately representing the shapes, colours and textures of the real organs - deep red, dark and uneven.

The garment is comprised of 3 elements. The vagina, cervix and uterus are held to the body using fabric straps, the Fallopian tubes are bright red arm-long gloves, and the ovaries are cotton-filled beige stockings. The person who wears it becomes these organs and serves as a form of visual protest.
