Looking Closer Creative Trail

  • Yasmin Aldrich

Let’s encourage young people to look closer at details around Museums and Heritage buildings. What interesting forms are hidden in corners, and what patterns can you see when you zoom in on objects or walls? What stories can they tell us? This project is a homage to the Flemish Weavers (or “Strangers”) who sought refuge in the UK, and brought tapestry making with them to cities like Norwich. Through the interactive trail for Strangers’ Hall Museum, young people are encouraged to use both observational and creative skills when visiting historical sites. New discoveries surrounding the History of Norwich’s textile industry can be unveiled - see old meet new when observing the abstracted tapestry piece influenced by creative ways of looking. During lockdown, I worked on adapting the project into a stay-at-home version. I realised that we all have our own museums at home, and created a project instagram containing quick activities that could be approached by all ages and interpreted in many ways. Work could be shared by using the #lookingcloserproject.
