Lussa Gin are a small batch gin company based on Jura and set-up by three women with a passion for the wildness of the island. They use botanicals grown and gathered on the island. To evoke the wildness of Jura I took my cue from the colour of the landscape; the copper of the bracken for the main label and logo lock-up, and made pen and ink sketches that evoked ‘field notes’ to help keep it rooted in its origin and evoke that unique and homemade feel. For the label on the back I drew a detailed study of the rocky outcrops of the Ardlussa Hills, which rise behind their distillery. This helps to root it locally and unique to their part of the island. I was keen to highlight the fact that it was established by three women by placing their names prominently on the label – usually seen in whisky packaging. The finishing touch is a tartan bottle collar, custom-made at the Islay Woollen Mill and based on the tweed of the Ardlussa Estate where Lussa Gin is based. Different sized bottles and limited editions were later produced, along with print advertising and a suite of illustrations for the website. In 2018 it won the Gold Award for Design at the International Wine & Spirit Competition. . www.lussagin.com . Photography: Susan Castillo Produced while employed at Front Page.
