Madame Hoppers Kitchen - Insect Confectionary

  • Shelby Smyth

Brief: To create a brand of insect products for human or animal consumption. What I did: There is no denying that in the western world, eating insects is deemed weird. However they are eaten in several other parts of the world, with no second thought. They have several proven health benefits, however we cannot seem to get past their initial form. When tackling this project I initially thought about how could I possibly make insect food appealing? Surely it is just too weird. However that was when It dawned on me. Instead of shying away from the fact that eating insects is weird, I should play into it. Madame Hoppers Kitchen is a brand of insect based confectionary for those who dare to try something different. Insect based confectionary was a gap in the market, and by playing into the fact that eating insects is weird, I was able to create a circus, freak show, victorian inspired concept that highlights the fact that it is weird, but weird does not always mean that it is bad or wrong. This project consisted of branding, packaging and marketing. The logo was hand rendered and then imported into Illustrator to give it a feeling reminiscent of victorian circus' and to give it a nod to victorian type design. I created labels for packaging, alongside posters and social media content. There are several hand rendered elements to this project, making the project a blend between digital and hand rendered, which I feel suits the project well as it is almost bringing the old victorian circus era into the modern day.
