About me
Hello, I’m Shelby - a graphic designer and illustrator, with a love for colour and texture. I am a creative, enthusiastic and hard-working designer, I am always willing to try new things and experiment. Utilising both hand rendered and digital techniques, I am at my happiest with an idea in mind and a pen in hand. You can always find me in and around Manchester, doodling and working away - usually tucked away in a coffee shop with a serious, panicked look on my face - only to realise I'm trying to illustrate a dinosaur in a ballgown. I have created a wide variety of engaging design projects from idea creation through to execution and sign off. My projects have ranged from branding, social media, packaging design, book illustration, motion graphics and Illustration. Throughout my freelance work and time studying, I have developed a strong knowledge of design principles, composition, and colour theory. I have a good knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, in Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. I am used to a fast paced environment, so I am very organised with excellent time management skills. I am constantly on the look out for inspiration for my work and keep myself very up to date with the design world. You can contact me at shelbysmythdesign@gmail.com

  • Final Major Project - Rock The Boat and Vote.
Final Major Project - Rock The Boat and Vote. This was my university final major project. With my final major project I wanted to challenge myself and tackle a large issue, that being voting within the youth demographic. The insight that I had both through being a part of this demographic and within my research was that the youth demographic are disengaged with politics and do not feel important. They are under represented, they are not spoken to by politicians and do not feel that they are deemed important. The way in which I tackled t
  • Notes Of The North
Notes Of The NorthNotes of the north is a social change passion project of mine in which I post anonymous notes out in public for strangers to find. These notes are intended to uplift and help others, as well as make them think. Although largely centred around mental health, I use notes of the north the enact social change by touching upon subjects such as inequality, racial injustice and prejudice within the content that I put out. The below images are some examples of social media posts that I will put on the

Royal Bolton NHS - Children's WardBrief: To make the children's ward a more comfortable place for children aged between 0-16. What we did: In brainstorming and researching what children enjoy and what calms them, we found that familiar things, and things that can bring back positive memories can be quite calming. We were given a brief by the Royal Bolton Hospital, this brief was essentially to make their children's ward more comfortable and inviting for the children, giving them more to engage with. Working in pairs we tackled
  • Madame Hoppers Kitchen - Insect Confectionary
Madame Hoppers Kitchen - Insect ConfectionaryBrief: To create a brand of insect products for human or animal consumption. What I did: There is no denying that in the western world, eating insects is deemed weird. However they are eaten in several other parts of the world, with no second thought. They have several proven health benefits, however we cannot seem to get past their initial form. When tackling this project I initially thought about how could I possibly make insect food appealing? Surely it is just too weird. However that wa
  • WellKid Rebrand.
WellKid Rebrand.Brief: To create packaging for a new or existing product. IDEA With this brief, I decided that I wanted to tackle something which typically is not visually appealing. That being vitamins. Wellkid is a well known brand of multivitamins for children between the ages of 4-12 years old. However I realised that their packaging is not appealing to children. Although they are marketed toward the parents in order to buy them for their children, I felt that it was important that the packaging was appea

Kansas - Motion Graphics - Lyrics Video.Brief Create a lyric video for a classic song. What I Did: I created a lyric video for Kansas' song 'Carry On My Wayward Son'. Being tasked with creating a lyric video for a classic song. I opted to create a video for Kansas' Carry On My Wayward Son. Soon into beginning creation I realised that I wanted to p
