Maddox Gallery, London - 3D Visualization (2018)

  • Nathan Taylor

One of the key service that curat10n provides is the ability to virtually recreate any real location or gallery space. Many "virtual" galleries simply use photography to capture an exhibition space and to share this in the form of a 360-degree image or video (à la Google Streetmap). This means that it is only useful for recording or capturing exhibitions which already exist. We take a different approach. We use architectural drawings, photographs and measurements to make a scale 3D model. This means that users can bavigate the space in full 3D. It also means that any kind of artwork can be placed into the space, making it ideal for exhibition planning, curating, visualization and decision making. This 3D visualization for Maddox Gallery was one of the the first "gallery recreation" projects we worked on. Our methods, software and visualizations have improved hugely since 2008 and we have since developed our own unique real-time editing software.

Laser measuring devices are used to accurately recreate the space, with minimal disruption. It's also possible to work from architectural drawings or floor plans. We are able to visit galleries and locations in the UK and Europe, depending on the level of accruacy required.
Materials and furniture can also be accurately recreated. We can also take photographs of key features and use these to make realistic materials. For example, we can use this technique for parquet flooring, mosaics, decorative windows, wallpapers or carpet designs.
Since working on this project in 2018 we have developed our own unique exhibition edting software. This allows users to select artworks from a collection and design an exhibitio in real-time. You can change the scale or artwork, as well as the ay it is framed.
