Material Flow Improvement - Borgwarner Inc

  • Valter Silva

From February until July of the present year, I did a project at Borgwarner. It is a multinational company and I was member of the Logistics Department, developing a MATERIAL FLOW IMPROVEMENT project, using the Lean thinking and Kaizen Tools to increase the efficiency of production. My team and I, analyzed the operation of all the material flow existing in the factory with the objective of identifying some existing problems. In order to increase the production, many concepts were applied, as the use of functional kanbans, logistic trains and line edges. The project achieved some goals: Material supply systems were implemented in production lines. It was possible to obtain savings in the movements of the workers to order raw material and to supply their jobs. The ergonomics associated with the line edges were promoted. It was possible to reduce the accumulation of stock in production, greater cleaning, organization and safety of the lines. Visual management mecanisms were created with the objective of facilitating the comunication between the needs of the production lines and logistics trains.
