Like the myths of mermaids who came ashore on Cornish beaches, Margo and Celeste find themselves stranded in the ‘in-between’: the chasm between the sea and land, adulthood and childhood, countryside and city, in a state of both ‘becoming’ and ‘unbecoming’ as they search for purpose and belonging in their twenties.
While the film exposes Margo and Celeste’s unimpressive lives, the cinematic style of the film will invite the audience into a world steeped in imagination.
I want to depict the CORNWALL I know, but is rarely shown on screen: a place that is wildly beautiful and rich in lively and interesting characters, yet often isolated, rundown, and neglected by the mainland.
Mermaids is for anyone whose life hasn’t gone to plan, but dares to stand on the precipice of the unknown and take another plunge.
