Modern Life is the first of my DIY projects involving the process of writing, recording and mixing an original composition from start to finish using DAW software Logic Pro. Upon release I carried out an organic promotional campaign by reaching out to local music bloggers with the goal of establishing a network with industry professionals, peer recognition and exposure to key demographics. Alongside this I utilised social media platforms in order to create calculated and timed posts. The song itself aimed to combine my love of poetry/spoken word with songwriting techniques established during my university studies. The single addresses political topics such as Brexit and the societal repercussions facing many of our communities underrepresented minorities. It also features an unusual structure of (intro, verse 1, pre-chorus, chorus, link A, Verse 2, pre-chorus, bridge, chorus) in an attempt to make it more unpredictable and encourage listeners to stick with it from beginning to end. Instrumentally I took a lot of inspiration from 80s post punk artists The Cure and The Smiths, emulating typical characteristics of chorus modulation effects, spring reverb, jangly guitar tones and diction stylised in ode to The Cure lead singer Robert Smith. For the album artwork I teamed up with a local Bristol artist to create a stand out and cohesive concept design.
