Movie Poster

BRIEF: To recreate a movie poster that reflects the themes of the movie "The Fall" (2006), and uses a visual element handmade away from the computer. Concept work for a student project. DEMOGRAPHIC: Adults, cinephiles interested in alternative films, with a touch of the unreal and magical. BIG IDEA: A movie about falling into despair, trying to find your way out of the labyrinth. SKILLS: concept development | paper crafting | art direction | photo manipulation | typography | mobile e-ticket

The design of this poster was inspired by M.C. Escher and Saul Bass.
The stairs were inspired by a scene in the movie which features Chand Baori, a stepwell situated in the village of Abhaneri in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The unending stairs gives a feeling of hopelessness which is very fitting for the themes of this movie. I created the paper stairs using a technique known as kirigami  which is like origami but has an element of cutting as well as folding.

After thumbnailing numerous layouts using a single image of the stairs, I decided to make it more abstract to give an even more surreal feeling of disorientation and confusion. The red and blue colours are important elements in the movie, so combining the 2 into 1 image and making the paths match up in an Escher-like manner completes the composition.
