Youth and pop culture provocateurs since 1991. Fearless fashion, music, art, film, politics and ideas from today's bleeding edge. Declare Independence. The VMA x New Generation Fashion Show celebrated 35 years of the MTV Video Music Awards, featuring designs from Collina Strada, Barragán, Gauntlett Cheng, No Sesso, and Vaquera. The emerging designers presented 30 original looks that celebrated the spirit of the VMAs, and paid tribute to the many iconic fashions that have hit the awards ceremony over the years. In other words, interpretations of memorable ensembles that have graced the VMAs stage or carpet—Madonna's conic bra, Britney Spears’s bedazzled bra and snake getup, or Lil’ Kim’s purple jumpsuit and matching nipple pastie. After 18 months navigating various states of lockdown, it should come as no surprise that the venue was packed full of excited fashion fans who screamed when models wearing Gauntlett Cheng’s crystal-studded slips strut down the catwalk to Britney Spears. When Vaquera sent its cast down the runway – in signature frou-frou taffeta dresses and pillowy derby hats, all in shades of sugared almond – as part of an ode to Madonna’s 1990 “Vogue” performance, the crowd went even more wild. Models tossed roses towards the audience as more screams erupted.
