In an article investigating the 'New Weird America' micro-genre, Niels Van Poecke states it ‘seeks to create alternate spaces for hope and desire’. The writer also discusses the music genres tendency to romanticise. This project involved the creation of a visual identity and a playlist that represents the micro-genre. In response to Poecke's analysis, the design proposes ‘light’ as a symbol of the genre. Light, and the light bulb, serve several songs on the New Weird America playlist when representing hope. Lightbulb filaments have been traced and manipulated to create the design. Each filament represents one song on the cassette by obtaining a structure that reflects its tempo and progression; maintaining a consistent visual language.
