No Fears - Digital Zine

  • Michelle Chong Jiahui
Brief: "To create a Digital Zine (small, independently published magazines, usually with a focus on specialist content and a DIY aesthetic although recently, many have become more polished and bespoke with widening interest, access to software and better distribution) which must be screen-based - a static website or a PDF magazine."

My digital zine "No Fears" was Inspired by Yayoi Kusama's auto-biography - Infinity Net. While reading the book, I realised that I could relate to how Yayoi Kusama felt when she left her home in Japan to start a new life she wanted in New York. Similarly, it took me some courage and full of passion in my course of study to step out of my comfort zone and pursue my studies in London. It felt exactly like a 'dream come true' thus my digital zine begins from a childhood dream I still could remember vividly.

It was then I met Yayoi Kusama in my dreams and was lead into her world. The whole aesthetic of the magazine is a design interpretation of her artwork and personality, basically made out of many polka-dots, having hallucinations and vibrant contrasting colours. In addition, to keep this digital zine personal and having hidden messages, I made use of overlays - revealing and hiding different content while scrolling.

This is my first experimentation with Adobe Muse + parallax one-page scrolling.
