- Sushistory - TimelineBrief: "To create a Timeline (a simple, graphical way of showing a series of events or changes) which should be engaging and visually stimulating." I selected sushi as my subject for this project and named my timeline "Sushistory" as a form of word play, which can be read as sushistory or sushistory. I first started researching on sushi and gathered as many facts for the timeline, e.g. Sushi was originated in Thailand and not Japan. I wanted my timeline to be engaging, thus I decided to create a website. I then set myself a challenge, which is to use illustration as my graphic execution. I spend about 3 days just illustrating sushi as illustration was not in my comfort zone of execution. I had neutral colours as my background to enhance the contrast knowing that the colours of the sushi varies and my impression of Japan was a land of spring (clean and fresh). I was also inspired by the modern invention of the conveyor belt, thus I made my timeline move as a .gif and having sushi moving along it. Lastly, make my timeline even more engaging, I included buttons and video so user can interact with the timeline and gain more knowledge regarding my subject rather than just scrolling all the way. This is another experimentation with Adobe Muse + horizontal scrolling. Duration of Project: 2 week
- No Fears - Digital ZineBrief: "To create a Digital Zine (small, independently published magazines, usually with a focus on specialist content and a DIY aesthetic although recently, many have become more polished and bespoke with widening interest, access to software and better distribution) which must be screen-based - a static website or a PDF magazine." My digital zine "No Fears" was Inspired by Yayoi Kusama's auto-biography - Infinity Net. While reading the book, I realised that I could relate to how Yayoi Kusama felt when she left her home in Japan to start a new life she wanted in New York. Similarly, it took me some courage and full of passion in my course of study to step out of my comfort zone and pursue my studies in London. It felt exactly like a 'dream come true' thus my digital zine begins from a childhood dream I still could remember vividly. It was then I met Yayoi Kusama in my dreams and was lead into her world. The whole aesthetic of the magazine is a design interpretation of her artwork and personality, basically made out of many polka-dots, having hallucinations and vibrant contrasting colours. In addition, to keep this digital zine personal and having hidden messages, I made use of overlays - revealing and hiding different content while scrolling. This is my first experimentation with Adobe Muse + parallax one-page scrolling. Duration of Project: 1 week
- 8-34-4°C - Experimental PublicationBrief: "Over the Christmas holidays your task is to gather data on what you get up to (this can be the number of steps you walk, the things you eat, etc). Using the data gathered, create a book that tells the story of your data." My Christmas break was spent in Singapore with my friends and family. I started collecting data like places I went to; interesting things I saw; the time I slept and also tickets/barcodes of anything I bought or events I went to. With all these data, I collated it into an excel sheet and categorised it into 3 main sections: Jetlag - Upon arrival in Singapore, I suffered from Jetleg for almost a week, this whole section documented how my days went by doing things I missed when I was in London. Celebrate - This section documents the Christmas and New Year celebration I had, it consist of mostly feasting and playing. Refresh - My last week in Singapore as well as the first week of 2016, it's as if starting off a new chapter in life feeling all revitalised. As a documentation of my whole Christmas break, I decided to make it like a visual diary, quite raw and personal. My book title "8°C - 34°C - 4°C" represented the temperature of both London and Singapore when I entered and left the countries; and based on the temperature it inspired me of this cooling and warm colours used in the book. In the book, you can find 3 different sets of data which repeats everyday - a map to represent the places I went to that day, illustrations as an interpretation of the interesting objects I saw and tickets and packaging I interacted with. During the break, I experimented with Brush Calligraphy, thus I decided to apply what I've learnt on the section titles. Book binding method: Coptic Binding Duration of Project: 3 week
