The first part of the design process consisted in deep primary and secondary research of existing book cover designs in the market. Through this research I detected the importance of continuity (consideration of front, spine and back), as well as the differentiating factors within the Adult Fiction genre such as typography and colour schemes. I developed a set of mood boards that helped me visualise the historical and cultural context of the novel.
The key is to understand the story in order to represent it. A book cover design must portray the author’s statement and message. Creating a visual identity that is fresh and different and that will consider different techniques without fear, is just as important. I identified four main themes to explore visually: silence, nostalgia, time and lifeline. I experimented with different media including acrylics, pencil colours as well as digital illustration.
