While I was doing my publishing masters, even though my main focus was to learn the trade and build experience as an editor and self-publisher, I realised I had a knack for and really enjoyed making graphics and using Adobe Suite. I used InDesign a lot during my final projects, and taught myself the basics of graphic design and typesetting with the help of tutorials and mentors. Through doing that, I learned to love lettering and letters as objects and wanted to further play with and explore typography and digital art. Over the last two years, I've spent hours at a time making what I call "my silly little drawings"– these are some samples below. Though they're less than perfect, and a bit rough and ready, each time I start a new design I set a goal in mind to master a certain effect or feature on Illustrator. I am a long way from mastering the programme, and I do feel like my skills are still very basic but I'm getting better every week. My designs draw inspiration from pop and internet culture, word play, anime and classical art. I would also say there's a sense of humour to my style– I enjoy this skill as an outlet for creativity and try not to take myself too seriously with it. Below is a selection of recent works. This is an ongoing project– probably more of a portfolio than anything else– with the intention of proving my ability in graphic design layout, typography, colour studies, digital ability, digital illustration, and text layout. I will add more finished works as I go along.
