Onna Wo Suteru

  • Emma Stevenson

'Onna Wo Suteru' in Japan, is the social construct on 'giving up on being a woman', which puts pressure on Japanese women to look a certain way. I used this modern Japanese construct and combined it with the traditional concept of how women are negatively portrayed in Japanese folklore to create a scroll and narrative playing on these perceptions. The narrative follows a Japanese woman climbing up a mountain, with characters trying to prevent her from doing so, as this is something women in Japan can still be banned from doing today in certain places.
