ORDINARY/EXTRA-ORDINARY

  • Megan Roberts

Our final project in my first year of University. The brief for the project was to take 2 objects off of a list of everyday household items and have them be the inspiration for the collection. I chose a hairclip and a torch, two very different looking and functioning objects. This project required a lot of observational drawing and studies of the objects in order to extract as much information from them as possible. I felt that an interesting way to interpret these objects and images would be through distorting them. It could also be a way of marrying the two objects. I also looked at images by photographer Alexander Harding, as his photographs focus on distorting light and highlight some really interesting colours you perhaps wouldnt normally see.

The colour scheme I developed was taken from a mix of Harding's photographs and some of my own that I took of the torch that I was given. The range of colours I managed to pick out was actually quite surprising, but it gave me a lot to work with and an interesting mix of tones.
Customer Profile: The woman who would wear this collection is very self confident in her own body and femeninity. She is very cool but minimal, with a 'less is more' attitude to accessorising. Her home, or where she feels most as home, is in the city; in the buzz and life of an urban envrionment. Wanting to always look the coolest in the room yet still prioritising comfort.
Distorting Design: To start the design process for this project I took the drawings I had done of the hairclip and took it into Photoshop to edit on the body. By using the puppet warp tool I was able to quickly create multiple iterations of ideas that I could then decide if I wanted to take further.
The checked pattern on the designs from the squared paper hits towards a chequered fabric or even a ripstop nylon.
