Penguin Book Awards 2020: Children's Cover

  • Cherie Waugh

The brief was to design a cover for the children’s book Goodnight Mister Tom to encourage a new audience of young readers to engage with it. I took the imagery of the cake from a scene in the book as it was important and added my own idea of having the cake smashed and crumbling to represent the crumbling London buildings after the air raids. My concept is allegorical and metaphorical but also exciting to look and engaging to a young reader. The back of the book adds the theme of war in order to tie all the ideas together.
