Playschool?: Taking Play Seriously

  • Annabel Lake
A dissertation exploring the importance of 'play' in design and design education.

"We live in a society suspicious of play in the sense that we are relatively unsure about how play 'works'. With play being rooted in frivolous children's games, it is often overlooked by scholars and academics who often dismiss it as a senseless activity. Yet there are countelss theorists and social scientists such as Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, Stuart Brown and 'play profession Brian Sutton Smith who all advocate play as a vital part of neurological growth, particularly within the development of creativity in children."
