This poster series explores the harmful archetypes/stereotypes of Black women and how these exploit a painful history, trauma and overall the self image of Black women. They make being a Black woman appear as monolithic or 'one of three categories'. I used imagery of the most prominent women I have recognised to fill these archetypes in media. From Hattie McDaniel and Tichina Arnold to Pam Grier. I ironically glorify the stereotypes in a way, through bold typography and colour that engage the viewer. These ingrained stereotypes, with a history of deep rooted racism, make it hard for the experiences of Black women to not appear monolithic. This creates the notion that Black women fall outside of being allowed to have regular human emotion/feelings without being profiled by these harmful archetypes.
