Processing Dogme 95

  • Amalia Aranguren

This publication consists of an extent analysis of contemporary graphic design and its superficiality. It also introduces the idea of transferring a work process created for the cinema to the graphic design industry. Dogme 95 is a manifesto written by Lars Von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, in this manifesto we can find 10 rules which are imposed on the director. In this project I make a translation of these rules into graphic design and argument why this way of facing a project could benefit us as designers.
My intention with this final representation (the photographs) is to create a practical example of everything Im against in this publication. Looking only at the photographs, without reading the text before-hand, one may think that this is an effective, attractive and visual design work, however, reading the text one will realize that I have made my project become everything which I rejecting in it. Focusing on the visuals and ornaments I ended up turning my project into something meaningless, empty. My decision for this result is based on seeking a reaction, I want to highlight that noise that I find within graphic design industry and turn it into something physical, a physical hindrance. Showing how easy it is to trivialize a meaningful piece of work when we let ourselves be carried away by that of a superficial character alone.
