R Rated is an art book showcasing horror film stills. It explores the similarities and tropes characteristic of the genre with a playful and ironic tone. Being a horror fan myself, I’ve always appreciated the visual nuances of horror and how the genre manages to explore taboo topics in unconventional ways. This is often overlooked by who is not interested in the genre. I tried to interpret and translate these nuances into an art book, that would be accessible to more people.

I explored and studied horror subgenres. Through documentaries and books, I discovered how horror evolved throughout history, and how it was influenced by society. I then explored the horror imagery.
I’ve collected a library of 500 film stills and divided them by similarities. I then observed new patterns that weren’t previously cited on other sources.
The text of the book was developed by Marco Augelli, a film director and screenwriter.

We researched film quotes and screenplays, collecting written content that would match the visuals and reflect the nuances.

We discovered more common influences between films and themes. I then combined the outcomes of my research and structured the book accordingly.
