RACEZINE Issue 2

  • okocha obasi

Issue two is the landmark of RACEZINE’s journey, it encapsulates the essence of the identity, mission, and purpose. This was directed by the collective duo Okocha Obasi (creative director and graphic designer) and Lauren Gee (copywriter and content producer) who worked collaboratively to produce this 40-page zine, featuring 34 different creatives in Yorkshire and other parts of the UK. The zine features an array of content from essays, interviews with emerging talent, self-care tips to poetry giving voice and visibility to the thoughts and feelings of the POC community. Some of the content was designed as special inserts, giving the readers a more interactive experience and the opportunity to customise each issue to their personal tastes. In turn, it offers both the public and creative community a chance to deepen their consciousness, to be more caring, and diversify their perspective. From creating a zine we have created a, a voice, a stage, a space and community, whose agenda is to champion the power of diversity and intellectual understanding and empathy for one another. Each creative who has been featured will be paid £15 for their submission to help encourage our audience to keep producing their talent. Through rigorous planning, the collective duo Okocha Obasi and Lauren Gee will work towards holding a digital panel to launch issue two and highlight creative concerns about post lockdown with a curated board comprised of creatives of color. The remaining money will go towards printing costs and also be used to help keep our club nights running, which offer paid opportunities to black, Asian, and brown DJs. Since Lockdown we released issue one completely free to the public, downloadable from our site. This is accompanied by music playlist and web link resources to help tackle some of the challenges which have risen during isolation. Our impact has crafted a community and space out of a zine publication, which efforts continue to grow and challenge ideals around race and identity.
