Ten years on since Comic Relief sent Gary Barlow, Alesha Dixon, Fearne Cotton, Cheryl, Kimberley Walsh, Ben Shepherd, Ronan Keating, Denise Van Outen and Chris Moyles to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, we were back at it again with new recruits are taking on a different, tougher, longer route spending even more time at extreme altitude.

The Challenge:

The 2019 saw TV presenter Dan Walker, Strictly Come Dancing Shirley Ballas, politician Ed Balls, Dani Dyer, Little Mix's Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Pointless' Alexander Armstrong, TV presenter Anita Rani, and sports personality Osi Umenyiora take on the week-long climbing challenge to reach the top.

There were numerous obstacles that we had to overcome from a social media perspective. Poor signal on the mountain meant that we could only receive short, shaky video clips from the mountain when a satellite phone was connected. Poorly trained social media staff on the climb didn't understand the basic requirements, and the plan to do an Instagram Live every evening fell through. We also had to balance the expectations of the BBC who were keen to hold back all surprises and secrets from the day until they were broadcast on The One Show every evening.

My Role:

Social media strategist and community manager. It became quite obvious during the period of the climb that we would just have to post on social media ad hoc as we did not know when assets were coming in, or even if they were coming in. We had to Live-Tweet throughout the duration of The One Show, as well as as answering peoples' questions, engaging with Little Mix fans, creating jokes and writing witty replies to comments.
