ReRunners: Race for the World

  • Jonathan Baker
ReRunners is a mutliplayer platformer game for iOS and Android developed by Klang Games - I was the Community & Communications Manager for the project.
The game received critical acclaim among the gaming press and the gaming community. Without blowing my own trumpet, I am partly responsible for the game's success. I swear.
Community Management
I built up from scratch and grew the game's social community - from Beta to Global Release and beyond. I was in charge of all strategies for community growth, as well as customer-facing communications; a fancy term for creating posts, videos, gifs, and all that cool stuff.
I initiated and managed the game's official Forum, which gave players a platform to leave feedback for the developers, take part in competitions, and most importantly, feel like they're an integral part of the ReRunners community.
Achievements:  - Increased YouTube subscriptions by over 3000% through organic growth - Increased Facebook Likes by over 1000% through organic growth - Increased Twitter followers by over 800% through organic growth
Press and Influencer Outreach
Throughout my time working on the game, I built up relationships with various mobile gaming journalists, media outlets, and influencers by making sure that I kept them in the loop during the game's development. This helped when reaching out for features and reviews.
One initiative that I'm very, very proud of, was launching the ReRunners Early Access program. Early Access gave Beta players the opportunity to play the final version of the game before it was released globally. This coincided with various press coverage and a live interview.
I also wrote all press releases for the game, alongside publisher Tilting Point.
Notable Reviews:
4.5 / 5 – TouchArcade Game of the Week – TouchArcade Gold Award – PocketGamer
Copywriting & Branding
The game's branding was very important to me, especially its tone-of-voice. It was crucial that the humour of ReRunners was represented, without alienating any audience. Having said that, the cruder the better.
I was responsible for all of the game's social media presence, and created the copy for the ReRunners' website and original App store copy in collaboration with Tilting Point.
One thing that I'm super proud of was conceiving the names of and writing all the descriptive text for the in-game clothing store – over 450 different pieces. This allowed me to combine my knowledge of fashion and popular culture with my love for innuendos. To this day, I honestly don't know how I got away with some of the stuff I wrote...
Partnerships & Third-Party Incentives
It was a huge honour to have been in the position to work with amazing visionaries and super-fun people within the mobile gaming industry, like the Mobcrush team. I worked closely with the developers on ways of incorporating the Mobcrush brand within ReRunners, the first game studio to initiate this incentive.
Lead by me, we created exclusive in-game Mobcrush t-shirts that were used for promotional use, and were given out to our Mobcrush partners – giving those wearing them a sense of fame within the game.
I also worked alongside some of Mobcrush's biggest and best live streamers, forming a great team of partnered streamers who had the freedom to stream the game when and if they liked.
ReRunners was made a featured game on Mobcrush three times: to coincide with the announcement of Early Access, during Global Launch week, and for the first major ReRunners update.
Localization Management
ReRunners is localized in French, Italian, German and Spanish; I would love to say that I was able to have translated the game fully, but I can say that I oversaw the game's localization process. I set up guidelines for translators and made sure that all translations were administered correctly.
Live Operations and In-Game Events
I worked with Tilting Point on live events / live promotions within the game, and ensured that they were actually doable from a developer point-of-view, such as changes to the game mechanics, discounts, and live competitions.
I managed and organized the Live Operations calendar, which included strategy planning, creative and copy creation.
Live Streaming
Three times a week, I streamed ReRunners live on Mobcrush. Mondays and Wednesdays you could hear my Brummie mumblings as I failed tremendously; Fridays I would live stream Klang's playtest session, giving viewers the chance to see new upcoming features and ask questions. As well as watch us drink copious amounts of beer.
