I was invited to decorate a deck for Saga’s new cruise liner ‘Spirit of Adventure’. The ship contains artwork from British artists throughout. I was commissioned to create 48 artworks in sets of 16 triptychs to line the cabin corridors of a complete deck. The client wanted location based illustrations that celebrated the United Kingdom and therefore my subtitle for this set of prints became ‘Splendours of the British Isles’. Through my own research I selected 48 different locations that I felt showcased an element of our cultural or natural heritage. The prints take the viewer on a journey around the British Isles from our capital city, through ancient parkland and along our extensive and varied coastline. Native wildlife such as London’s plane trees, the Lake District’s red squirrels and the Norfolk Broads’ returning cranes are all celebrated throughout the series. Architectural triumphs like Canterbury Cathedral or Cornwall’s Minack theatre, carved into the cliffs above the Atlantic Ocean, also feature. All the illustrations were created digitally and then printed as fine art Giclee prints for display in the corridors.
