Sanlam Sun Met 2018: Under African Skies

  • Michelle Baron

Sanlam asked us to design a pack to invite their VIPs to their invitation-only tent at this year’s Sun Met, Africa’s richest race day. The design had to reflect the Sun Met’s theme “Style ahead of the field” – a celebration of fashion-forward Africa, as well as represent Sanlam’s sense of optimism for and confidence in South Africa’s future. Our concept, under African skies, spoke to this optimism and South Africa’s future-forward attitude by communicating that under African skies, anything is possible. Under African skies we dream, we craft, we innovate and inspire. Under African skies, every sunrise holds the promise of a new day and every sunset, the knowledge of a day well done. We designed an African-inspired pattern to represent where the African sky meets the land, which was then laser cut into the cover of a custom-made sleeve. We designed three double-sided cards, which were placed in the sleeve. The front of each card shone with a metallic gradient print inspired by snapshots of the sky, from the violet, indigo and blues of the dawn of a new day to a sunset soaked with magenta, orange and fiery reds. These vibrant colours shone through the cutwork on the front of the sleeve to reveal a new version of the sky as each card was removed. The back of the cards included the relevant details of the Sun Met events.
